In cities all throughout the world, road traffic is still the main cause of air pollution. In pre-pandemic Europe (2018), road transportation was responsible for more than 39% of nitrous oxide (NOx) emissions and 10% of primary PM2.5 and PM10 emissions. Many European cities had even higher pollution levels. The planned Euro 7 Emissions Standard was finally presented by the European Commission on November 10, 2022, after several delays. When it is finally adopted, the much-awaited standard will replace Euro 6, which was established in 2014. It may also serve as the last internal combustion engine (ICE) regulation in Europe.

Euro 7 Emissions Standard, a way to save the planet or ICVs?

The automotive world in recent years has been facing one of the greatest transformations in its history. The energy transition is now a necessity in this field as well. Zeroing out polluting emissions, due to CO2 and NOx caused mainly by exhaust gases from ICVs fuelled by gasoline and diesel, is now a duty of all the most developed nations, starting with Europe.

Remanufacturing batteries is a big opportunity, both from an environmental and economic perspective. From an environmental perspective, batteries contain hazardous materials such as lead, cadmium, and mercury that can contaminate soil and groundwater if not properly disposed of. Remanufacturing these batteries prevents these materials from ending up in landfills or being released into the environment, which can have harmful effects on both human health and the environment. From an economic perspective, remanufacturing batteries can recover valuable metals and other materials that can be used in the production of new batteries and other products. This reduces the reliance on mining for raw materials, which can be expensive and have negative environmental impacts.

The electric vehicle (EV) industry is growing at a rapid pace, with a global market share projected to be, depending on who you ask, between 7 and 30 percent by 2030.

On 14 February 2023, the European Parliament gave its final approval to a 2035 sales ban on new carbon-emitting gasoline and diesel vehicles, with the goal of removing them off the continent's roads by the middle of the century.

Banning new sales of ICVs by 2035 approved: what now?

The electric automotive world is increasingly preparing for the appointment! The date is 2030, the year in which a wide range of car manufacturers have set the goal of producing only electric cars, thus giving up ICVs and hybrids. Favorable policy measures by the governments are continuing to sustain this transformation. The usage of custom platforms for electric vehicles will enable OEMs to overcome most of the current challenges faced in electrification.

Are the big automakers ready to be fully electric by 2030?

Retrofitting is an innovative system to enter the world of BEVs while saving money compared to a BEV on the market. Initially, it was designed to transform classic cars, but currently, it is a real driving force to enter the world of BEVs.

Retrofitting cars: a new sustainable way to enter the electric vehicle market

For OEMs who do not have remanufacturing capabilities but wish to benefit from the remanufacturing business, authorisation is a frequent option. There are primarily two authorisation strategies to consider: dealer and remanufacturing authorisation. To compare the three scenarios, competition, cooperation with dealer authorisation, and cooperation with remanufacturing authorisation, a stylized model is created.
