Sensify, an innovative by-wire software-defined braking system

Sensify is fitted as standard on 100% of the vehicles in the program, confirming the platform’s readiness for full industrial deployment. Designed as a scalable and adaptable solution, Sensify is engineered to support a wide range of advanced vehicle architectures, from next generation driver assistance systems to fully autonomous applications, marking a key milestone in the evolution of braking toward a truly software-defined future. This milestone represents a significant step forward in the adoption of by-wire software-defined braking systems for safety critical automotive applications.

“Sensify translates our vision of an intelligent, integrated braking platform into industrial reality,” said Daniele Schillaci, CEO of Brembo. “Designed to orchestrate the entire corner ecosystem, it supports safer mobility, while paving the way for the next generation of software-defined vehicles, reflecting our long-term purpose of shaping a Zero Accident Future.”

Sensify was born as a fluid-free architecture that distributes intelligence at wheel level, removing hydraulic circuits and centralized actuation. This innovative approach enables accurate and continuous modulation of braking forces, supporting stable and controlled vehicle behaviour in complex and highly variable driving conditions, enhancing peace of mind.

As the market sees a growing wave of announcements around electromechanical braking technologies (EMB), Sensify stands apart with state-of-the-art hardware and adaptable software layers. It naturally integrates into the software-defined vehicle paradigm, allowing manufacturers to deploy advanced functionalities across vehicle platforms while ensuring scalability, consistency and long-term value throughout the vehicle lifecycle.

Following Sensify’s entry into production for a leading global manufacturer, Brembo has also recently signed additional contracts with new customers. As a result, Brembo expects to equip hundreds of thousands of vehicles per year, paving the way for large scale deployment of Sensify and reinforcing the company’s ambition to help shape a Zero Accident Future.

Greenance, the state-of-the-art technology to reduce the particulate emissions of braking systems

Brembo has developed the Greenance technology as a response to the growing demand for more sustainable mobility solutions without compromising braking performance. This innovation focuses on significantly reducing the environmental impact of braking systems, particularly in terms of particulate emissions, while maintaining the high standards of safety, durability, and efficiency expected in modern vehicles.

Greenance is based on a combination of advanced disc metallurgy and specially engineered brake pad materials. The brake discs are coated using a dual-layer, nickel-free technology applied through laser metal deposition, which creates a highly resistant surface. This coating is crucial because it drastically reduces wear during braking operations. As a result, the generation of particulate matter, commonly referred to as brake dust, is minimized. This is particularly relevant in urban environments, where non-exhaust emissions from braking systems are becoming a major concern for air quality and public health.

The reduction in wear also translates into a longer lifespan for both discs and pads. Compared to traditional cast iron discs, Greenance discs can last significantly longer, sometimes up to double the mileage under comparable conditions. This durability not only lowers maintenance costs for vehicle owners but also contributes to sustainability by reducing the frequency of component replacement and the associated resource consumption. Fewer replacements mean less raw material extraction, less energy used in manufacturing, and a decrease in waste generation.

Another key aspect of Greenance is its compatibility with a wide range of vehicles, including internal combustion engine cars, hybrids, and fully electric vehicles. This versatility is important because electric vehicles, despite producing zero exhaust emissions, tend to be heavier due to battery packs and can generate significant brake wear under certain driving conditions. By integrating Greenance technology, manufacturers can address one of the hidden environmental challenges of electrification.

In terms of performance, the technology ensures consistent braking efficiency even under demanding conditions. The coated discs provide improved thermal stability, which helps maintain braking effectiveness during repeated or high-speed stops. Additionally, the optimized friction pairing between discs and pads ensures smooth and quiet operation, enhancing overall driving comfort. These characteristics make Greenance suitable not only for everyday driving but also for higher-performance applications.

From a regulatory perspective, Greenance aligns with the tightening emissions standards being introduced in various regions, particularly in Europe. Future regulations are expected to include limits on non-exhaust emissions, and technologies like this position manufacturers ahead of compliance requirements. This proactive approach reflects a broader shift in the automotive industry, where sustainability is no longer limited to tailpipe emissions but encompasses the entire lifecycle and operation of the vehicle.
