MERA calls for action against Michigan vote to prohibit access to remanufactured parts

Wednesday, 1 June 2016

MERA is calling for action regarding new legislation that is about to be passed in the state of Michigan in the United States. Michigan House Bill 4344, should it pass, will prohibit the use of aftermarket and remanufactured parts to repair vehicles that are less than 5 years old.

MERA advises that this bill could pass within less than 48 hours.

The bill would ban remanufactured parts and components from being used in repairs in any light-duty Michigan vehicle, for a period of 5 years from purchasing the vehicle.

MERA announced that together with the MEMA Washington Office they sent a strongly-worded letter of opposition last week to all Michigan representatives and senators. In addition, the MEMA DC Office called Governor Snyder’s office. Although the governor is aware of MERA’s stance, his office has not yet expressed whether he would veto the bill should it reach his desk.

MERA is urging their members to take immediate action. They suggest to email or call local Michigan representatives and senators to express opposition to HB 4344. For those who do not know their local district, or need contact information for their legislators, are able to contact MERA.

When contacting elected officials, in addition to sharing with them how this would hurt your business, MERA suggests to let them know how this bill would:

  • Limit consumer choice in repair options
  • Increase repair costs by mandating OEM parts
  • Negatively impact aftermarket retail sales
  • Hurt manufacturing jobs

MERA urges members in other states to spring in to action as well, to prevent Michigan of setting a precedent for the rest of the United States.
